FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Senior Malcolm Clark hit a running layup with one second left to give Shenandoah University a 68-67 non-league men's basketball victory over Methodist Wednesday afternoon.
Clark's bucket completed a contest in which Shenandoah (3-1) led for more than 30 minutes, but needed a late rally thanks to a Methodist (0-4) comeback.
Leading by 13 points following a Gabriel Gonzalez jumper at the 12:07 mark of the second, SU could only watch as the Monarchs scored 18 of the game's next 22 points to take a 53-52 lead with 6:14 to go.
The two teams then traded the lead four times and were tied on three other occasions in the next 1:58 before Methodist scored six straight points (aided by a Shenandoah technical foul) to lead 64-58 with 2:36 remaining.
Clark then took over.
The senior scored the game's next seven points and nine of the Hornets final 10 as Shenandoah won for the first time since 2009 at Methodist and just the third time overall (second versus MU) since the Hornets and Monarchs began playing the series in 1992.
Clark's final bucket, which gave him a game-high 23 points, did not end the game, however.
Methodist was able to draw a foul in the backcourt, sending Bryan Rouse to the line with the opportunity to send the game into overtime with two successful free throws.
Rouse made the first before hitting the front rim on the second, and Shenandoah had the win as soon as Clark pulled down the defensive rebound.
Clark had a team-high nine rebounds in addition to his 23 points while Gonzalez had 10 points off the bench.
SU shot 41 percent from the field (24 of 59) and had a 46-42 advantage on the boards, but struggled to a 15 of 26 showing (58 percent) at the line.
Shenandoah is off for the next seven days until opening ODAC play at Lynchburg on Wednesday, November 30.
