WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University football team saw its four-game winning streak end Saturday with a 37-34 ODAC loss to Hampden-Sydney.
The Tigers (3-6, 3-3 ODAC) jumped out to a 34-13 by the midway point of the third quarter but had to recover a late onside kick as Shenandoah (6-3, 4-2) staged a furious comeback.
Trailing 34-13 after Alec Cobb scored on a 5-yard TD run following a blocked punt, the Hornets scored 21 of the game's final 24 points to make it 37-34 with 2:02 remaining.
After failing to recover the ensuing onside kick, Shenandoah could only watch as H-SC took a knee on its final three offensive plays to seal the win.
Shenandoah's final touchdown, a seven-yard Hayden Bauserman to Justin Ayers TD pass, came just 30 seconds after the Tigers essentially iced the game on a Jordan Chalkey 23-yard field goal.
Chalkey's 23-yard attempt capped a 20-play, 78-yard drive that took 10:03 and saw H-SC convert two third down attempts and a 4th-and-7 from the SU 39.
Hampden-Sydney ended up with 40:49 in possession to 19:11 for the Hornets.
The hosts final drive was one of two that was set up by big Jalen Hudson kickoff returns. Hudson had four kickoff returns for 174 yards including 53 yards following that Chalkey field goal. SU took just two plays to score the final touchdown of the game and give itself a chance on the onside kick.
Bauserman's TD pass was one of four he had on the day; the sophomore finished his afternoon 21 of 40 for 311 yards and four touchdowns but saw his interception streak ended as he threw a pick to Bender Vaught in the third quarter.
Bauserman completed passes to five different receivers with Michael Ashwell picking up 88 yards on eight catches and Leonard Scott 83 yards on three.
Ayers had two touchdown receptions with Ashwell and Qlyl Middelijn picking up one each.
H-SC rolled up 471 yards of total offense on 88 plays with running back Mike DeMasi gaining 187 yards rushing on 33 carries. Cobb was 24 of 31 for 263 through the air.
Shenandoah completes its season next Saturday with a 1 p.m. ODAC game at Washington and Lee.
