Softball Splits Doubleheader

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - The Shenandoah softball team completed its opening weekend by splitting a non-league doubleheader with Salem College Sunday afternoon.

Shenandoah (3-1) bounced back from a 4-1 loss in the opener to take the nightcap 5-4.

While the Hornets' pitching staff didn't record any strikeouts in the game two victory, Carrie Robinson and Courtney Topper scattered four hits and five walks. Topper (1-0) was the winner with 3 2/3 innings of relief work.

Ashlyn Drake had a strong day at the plate, finsihing the contest with three hits. Lindsay Corbin added two hits and an RBI. 

SU scored one run in the second, two in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth to offset the Spirits four-run fourth.

Trailing 4-3 heading to the fifth, Haley Koeninger brought home Megan Wilk with a sacrifice fly before Corbin's sixth inning single to plate Megan Vanderburgh proved to be the game-winning run.

The Hornets had nine hits in the opener, including three by Drake and two from Wilk, but could only score one run in the 4-1 defeat.

Corbin (1-1) went the distance, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk. She struck out three.

Shenandoah is back in action March 4 and 5 at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast. The Hornets open the tournament by taking on Rutgers-Camden.
