Catholic Sweeps Softball

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team came up one run short in both ends of a non-league doubleheader versus Catholic University of America Wednesday evening.

Catholic (10-2) was a 3-2 victor in the opener before completing the sweep over Shenandoah (6-8) with a wild, 15-14, nine-inning win in the nightcap.

SU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game two thanks to three runs in the first and two more in the third only to see CUA put up an eight-spot in the fourth to take an 8-5 advantage.

Trailing by those three runs heading into the bottom of the seventh, coach Marlena Kotynski's squad put together the first of two rallies that extended the contest.

With two outs, pinch hitter Karli Rorabaugh, third baseman Melissa Brooks and centerfielder Kimberly Brady strung together consecutive RBI singles to knot the game at 8-8 and send it into extra innings.

After giving up three in the top of the eighth, the Hornets answered with their own three-spot thanks to Lindsay Corbin sacrifice fly and a Kristen Weadon two-run single.

The Cards appeared to put the game out of reach by tagging relief pitcher Carrie Robinson (3-4) with four runs on five hits in the ninth, but Shenandoah again had an answer.

The Hornets scored three runs in the bottom of the frame, two on a Kayla O'Connell double to left, to cut the deficit to 15-14 with Corbin coming to the plate.

Unfortunately for the SU faithful, CUA second baseman Hailey Horton was able to snag Corbin's sinking liner just inside the rightfield line for the final out of the contest.

O'Connell and Weadon led a 20-hit attack with four each while Brady had three and shortstop Megan Vanderburgh two.

Weadon drove in three runs.

In game one, Robinson allowed just three hits, but hit a pair of batters that ended up scoring runs and gave up an unearned run in the seventh that proved to the game-winner.

She struck out four and walked five in the complete game performance.

Brady had two of the Hornets six hits and Drake drove in a pair, one on a single to left in the fifth and the second on a sacrifice fly to center in the seventh, to lead the hosts offense.

Shenandoah opens up ODAC play Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. doubleheader versus Virginia Wesleyan.
