WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team split its opening ODAC doubleheader of the 2016 season Wednesday versus Bridgewater College.
Shenandoah (7-9, 1-1 ODAC) rebounded to win game two, 11-3 in five innings, after BC (4-12, 1-1) was a 7-6 victor in the opener.
Freshman Carrie Robinson (4-4) went the distance in game two, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks.
Robinson was the beneficiary of an eight-run first for the Hornets - coach Marlena Kotynski's club sent 11 women to the plate as SU scored eight runs on eight hits off of Bridgewater starter Hannah Traia (1-2).
Kimberly Brady and Ashlyn Drake both had two hits in the frame. Their second hits, a single to right for Brady and a two-run single to short for Drake, were part of a string in which Shenandoah had six consecutive hits and seven straight batters reach safely.
Six of the eight runs in the inning came with two outs.
Drake finished that game 2 for 3 with three RBI with Brady, Kayla O'Connell, Megan Wilk, Kristen Weadon and Melissa Brooks all getting two hits each.
The Hornets had 11 hits in the opener, but committed three errors that led to five unearned runs in the 7-6 defeat.
Leading 6-4 heading into the seventh, SU saw Bridgewater score three runs (two unearned) in its last at-bat to steal the victory.
Haley Koeninger was 3 for 3 to lead the Shenandoah offense in the opener.
Lindsay Corbin (2-5), who had two hits at the plate, took the loss in the circle. She allowed seven runs (two earned) on nine hits and three walks.
The Hornets continue this homestand on Friday with a 5:30 ODAC doubleheader versus Randolph-Macon.
