Softball Wins Twice

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team swept its two games at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast Saturday, downing Rutgers-Camden and Keuka in a pair of non-league contests.

The Hornets (5-3) opened with a 5-2 victory over Rutgers-Camden before defeating Keuka 4-3 in eight innings.

In game one, senior Kimberly Brady and Kayla O'Connell hit home runs, the latter on a pinch-hit grand slam, as Lindsay Corbin scattered eight hits in the complete game victory.

Corbin (2-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on the eight hits and two walks while striking out three.

O'Connell's blast, in the third, staked SU to a 4-0 lead.

Shenandoah took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning of game two, but needed to rally with one in the bottom of the seventh and another in the eighth to complete the 4-3 win.

Freshman Carrie Robinson (2-1) overcame that three-run seventh to earn the victory in the circle. She struck out six and walked four in the complete game performance.

Junior Karli Rorabaugh provided the game-winning hit by plating Brady with a triple to right.

In the seventh, down to its last out, SU knotted the game at 3-3 on a Megan Vanderburgh single to left. She brought home Kristen Weadon, who had reached on a one-out double to right and advanced to third on a Melissa Brooks groundout.

Coach Marlena Kotynski's team is back in action today with a 2 p.m. non-league doubleheader at former USA South Conference rival Christopher Newport.
