Baseball Swats Wasps

WINCHESTER, Va. - The No. 8/10 Shenandoah University baseball team ran its winning streak to six games Sunday by sweeping an ODAC doubleheader from Emory and Henry.

Shenandoah (23-6, 10-4 ODAC) vaulted itself into first place in the ODAC by sweeping the double-dip over E&H (8-24, 4-11).

The Hornets were 8-2 victors in the opener before taking the nightcap 9-2.

In game one, junior Steve Jones (1-1) came on in relief of senior Darrell Thompson to pick up the victory.

After Thompson allowed two runs on two hits and three walks in 2.0 innings of work, Jones came on three batters into the third and snuffed out the Wasps rally by retiring his first three batters. The right-hander scattered three hits and two walks over the 6.0 innings of work before Robert Klinchock worked a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the contest.

Klinchock struck out the first two he faced.

The Hornet offense banged out 12 hits, three by Joe Coleman and two each from Ryan Glendon and Tyler Hott, to provide Jones with some breathing room.

Hott and Zach Herbaugh, the No. 8 and 9 hitters in the SU lineup, were a combined 3 for 8 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Senior lefty Michael Scimanico (4-1) picked up the game two win after striking out six and giving up two runs on six hits and two walks in 7.0 innings.

Ryan Kinter worked the eighth and Phil Morse the ninth, with Morse striking out two, to finish it off.

All nine hitters had at least one hit in the nightcap with Jake Loew driving in a pair on a two-run home run in the second.

Shenandoah scored five runs in that second inning on six hits - the Hornets sent nine men to the plate and all of the damage was done with two outs.

Tristan Baker also had two RBI in the win.

Coach Kevin Anderson's squad steps out-of-conference on Monday for a 3:30 game at York (Pa.).
