Roanoke Sweeps Softball

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Roanoke College used big fifth innings in both ends of an ODAC softball doubleheader Saturday to sweep Shenandoah University.

Roanoke (18-18, 9-7 ODAC) was a 9-1 victor in the opener before taking game two, 11-2, over the Hornets (8-24, 2-12).

Both games were halted after five innings.

In game one, Roanoke scored seven runs in the fifth to break open a close contest and take the 9-1 victory.

Six of the runs in the frame were unearned as the Maroons sent 11 women to the plate and scored five runs with two outs.

SU was held to just one hit, a third inning home run by senior Kimberly Brady, in the loss. She led off the frame with a line shot over the left field fence.

Lindsay Corbin (3-12) took the loss after allowing nine runs (three earned) on 11 hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Game two was similar as the Maroons expanded a 4-2 lead into the 11-2 victory with a seven-run fifth. Thirteen women came to the plate in the rally and Shenandoah helped Roanoke's cause with two errors that caused three of the runs to be unearned.

Freshman Carrie Robinson (4-12) went the distance, allowing the 11 runs (six earned) on 13 hits and two walks.

Brady had two of the Hornets four hits in the nightcap with Janae Hester driving in a run.

Shenandoah completes its non-conference slate on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. home doubleheader versus Messiah.
