Baseball Wins in Tenth

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – No. 11/14 Shenandoah University matched last season's win total with a 9-8 non-league baseball victory at Elizabethtown Wednesday afternoon.

Shenandoah (28-8) earned the extra-inning victory as freshman Tristan Baker executed a perfectly timed hit-and-run to score Joe Coleman from second base in the top of the 10th.

Coleman, the Hornets leadoff hitter, reached with a two-out single to center and then stole second base to put himself in scoring position.

Baker's hit, the 13th of the day for the victors, capped a contest in which SU held an 8-3 lead midway through the fifth only to see E-town (18-14) rally with two runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh.

Junior Tyler Hott (1-0) earned his first career victory with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief while Phil Morse picked up his seventh save after pitching a near-perfect 10th.

Morse opened with a strikeout and a groundout to first before putting the tying run on via a hit batsman. He then struck out designated hitter Ryan Shirk to end the contest.

All nine SU hitters had at least one hit with the top five hitters in the lineup: Coleman, Baker, Abel Arocho, Jake Loew and Ryan Glendon, getting two hits each.

Loew had a grand slam in the third; the dinger was his team-leading sixth of the season and his fourth in the past six contests.

Shenandoah completes its regular season on Saturday with a noon ODAC doubleheader at Lynchburg. A sweep over the LC Hornets clinches the No. 1 seed for SU at the upcoming ODAC Tournament.
