LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Shenandoah University baseball team was eliminated from the ODAC Tournament Saturday evening with a 4-2 loss to second-seeded Randolph-Macon.
No. 2/4 Macon (31-6-1) scored two unearned runs in the top of the 13th inning to end the No. 9/11 Hornets (32-10) run in the tournament.
Macon scored the two unearned runs in the 13th as its first two hitters reached on a walk and a single to left, sending Mitchell Keeler to the plate.
Keeler attempted a sacrifice bunt, which Hornets third baseman Robert Marcelle fielded cleanly. Unfortunately for SU, Marcelle's throw skidded past first baseman Luke Nussman and allowed the two runners to score.
Reliever Tyler Hott (1-1), who came on to start the seventh, avoided further damage with three groundouts, but the damage was done.
In the bottom of the frame, catcher Tyler Murray led off with a single up the middle, but Yellow Jackets reliever Christian Cok (7-0) shut the door with two groundouts and a flyout.
Cok, who came on to start the 10th, earned the win with four innings of scoreless relief.
The two unearned runs capped a contest in which the two teams were never separated by more than one run.
Shenandoah scored single runs in the second and fourth with R-MC scoring one in the fourth and another in the sixth to send the game into extra innings.
Nussman and Murray each had two hits for the Hornets.
Starting pitcher Ryan Mossman allowed two runs (both unearned) on four hits in six innings pitched.
Shenandoah will now await the announcement of a possible Pool C berth into the NCAA Tournament. The tournament field will be announced in mid-May.
