Royals Down Women's Hoops

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Eastern Mennonite University used a big second quarter to fuel a 74-45 ODAC women's basketball victory over Shenandoah Wednesday evening.

Shenandoah (4-14, 1-8 ODAC) held a 14-8 lead after Mia Moore opened the second quarter scoring with a jumper 25 seconds into the stanza, but this would prove to be the Hornets high-water mark.

The Royals (11-6, 6-3) answered that bucket with a 12-3 run over a span of 2:33 to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Senior Olivia Callan had the lone bucket for the hosts in that spurt, hitting a 3-pointer at 8:36.

EMU did not let up following Callan's '3' as it headed into the halftime locker room by scoring 21 of the final 23 points of the stanza.

The Royals extended their lead out to 25 points by the midway point of third before Shenandoah outscored EMU 12-6 in the final 4:11 of the period.

Two buckets to start the fourth, by Kirstyn Arcata and Erin French, cut the deficit to 16 points.

Unfortunately, this would be as close as SU would come the rest of the way.

Eastern Mennonite ended the game on an 18-5 run to coast home to the 29-point win.

French and Arcata both had nine points for the hosts with Moore adding six.

Chloe Roach led all scorers with 26 points.

EMU had a 42-28 advantage on the boards and shot an even 50 percent to 32 percent for the Hornets.

Shenandoah takes to the road Saturday afternoon to take on Lynchburg College in a 2 p.m. ODAC contest.
