LYNCHBURG, Va. – Host Lynchburg College rallied for a 3-2 women's soccer win over Shenandoah University Wednesday night in the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals.
Seventh-seeded Shenandoah (10-9) led, 2-1, following an Emily Yergin goal in the 54th minute, but Lynchburg (16-3) had the answer.
Second-seeded and No. 25 in-the-nation LC brought the game back to level on a Rachel Cooke tally in the 62nd minute before netting the game-winner in the 74th.
Until that point, SU had gone toe-to-toe with the perennial ODAC power.
Sophomore Alison Spaziani gave Shenandoah the early lead when she finished off a through pass from classmate Sara Fuller just 2:30 into the contest.
Lynchburg was able to tie the contest at 1-1 with a goal 32 seconds into the second half, but Shenandoah would not back down.
Yergin's goal, her 11th of the season, was a highlight-reel tally as the sophomore took the ball with her back to the goal from 20 yards out, turned and ripped her shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net.
After LC took its first lead with 26:21 to play, SU was able to get shots on goal from Rebecca Collimore in the 78th minute and Yergin in the 83rd, but could not find the equalizer.
"I thought Emily (Emily Yergin), Rebecca (Rebecca Collimore) and Alex (Alex Wessel) played excellent games tonight," SU coach Liz Pike said. "We had the lead most of the game but unfortunately we could not hold on."
Lynchburg took 19 of the game's 30 shots and eight of the 10 corners.
Shenandoah goalkeeper Kasey Richitt had four saves in each half.
The women will announce their 2018 schedule this spring.
