Women's Hoops Falls Just Short

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting N.C. Wesleyan survived a big fourth quarter run from Shenandoah to escape with a 62-60 non-league women's basketball victory Wednesday evening.

Trailing by the final score, Shenandoah (4-4) had a 3-point attempt with two seconds remaining make it halfway down the cylinder before spinning out and giving the Bishops (3-6) their third straight win in the longtime series between the former USA South Conference rivals.

The near game-winner from sophomore Shannon Kuhn ended a furious comeback in which the Hornets erased a 13-point second quarter deficit and a seven-point gap midway through the fourth.

Shenandoah climbed back into the game first on the strength of a 14-0 run that sandwiched halftime and then a 12-4 spurt that put SU up one, 58-57, with 3:13 remaining.

NCWC retook the lead by making a pair from the line on its next trip down the floor and then made one field goal and one free throw in the final 1:48 to clinch the contest.

Leading by one, 61-60 following a Briana Turner jumper in the lane, the Bishops began a stretch in which it mitigated two missed shots and two missed free throws with one steal, an offensive rebound and seeing SU turn the ball over in the front court to get the ball back with 18 seconds remaining.

Shenandoah fouled four seconds later, and Cheria Turrentine hit 1-of-2 from the line to extend the visitors lead to the final margin.

Kuhn's 3-pointer went in and out with two seconds left and Wesleyan grabbed the rebound to secure the victory.

Ashley Stone paced the hosts with a game-high 18 points with Kirstyn Arcata adding 16 points.

NCWC had a 51-40 edge on the glass that led to a 23-6 advantage in second chance points.

Shenandoah shot 40 percent (23-of-57) from the field to the Bishops 33 percent (25-of-76).
