ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team enters its Christmas break on a winning note thanks to a 94-90 non-league win at Elizabethtown Tuesday evening.
The overtime win is the second this season for Shenandoah (6-3) and the Hornets second in five lifetime meetings versus E-Town (3-6).
Sophomore Christian Meredith nailed the game-winner for SU, hitting a 3-pointer off of a Christopher Chaney assist with 30 seconds remaining.
Meredith, who finished with 11 points, then clinched the victory by making 1-of-2 from the line with one second left.
Meredith's brother, senior Jonah Meredith, scored 14 of his team-high 24 points in the second half to help SU erase a two-point halftime deficit and force the extra session.
Trailing 83-81 after the Blue Jays hit 1-of-2 from the line with 25 seconds left, Jonah Meredith raced the length of the court for the game-tying layup.
E-Town turned it over with three seconds left on its final possession of regulation.
The two teams were tied three times and traded the lead three times in overtime after swapping the lead eight times and being tied on eight additional occasions in regulation.
That final lead change, on Christian Meredith's 3-pointer, gave the Hornets their second overtime win of the season (in second OT game in the past three contests) and puts the squad more than halfway to last season's win total.
Senior Aaron Patterson led a 48-point effort from the bench personnel with 20 points on six field goals (five 3-pointers) and a 3-for-4 performance from line.
Chaney had his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. After being outrebounded by six in the first half, SU was plus-seven on the glass in the second half to win the rebounding battle, 39-38.
Shenandoah also scored 25 points off of 20 'Jays turnovers.
"I'm very proud of our guys for again closing out a close game," head coach Adam Walsh said. "This is our third straight road win and I think our guys are learning so much from our experiences. Our guys worked really hard over the last week and we are seeing improvement from all of them. This is a great way to head home for the holidays!"
The Hornets return to action on December 29 by taking on host Christopher Newport in the first round of the CNU Captains Classic.
