WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Roanoke held Shenandoah University without a point for the final three minutes of the game to rally for a 76-69 ODAC men's basketball victory Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (9-16, 5-11 ODAC) led by as much as 12 and had a six-point, 53-47, lead following a Jonah Meredith 3-point play with 12:10 remaining.
Unfortunately, Roanoke (14-10, 9-7) had an answer.
The Maroons scored 10 of the game's next 15 points to cut it to one, 58-57, with 7:42 left and after SU extended the lead back out to four points on two additional occasions, finally caught the Hornets at the 5:35 mark.
In the next four possessions, the two teams traded the lead three times before Joey Miller put RC on top to stay with a layup at 2:42.
Josh Freund had the go-ahead bucket for the Maroons, hitting a layup with 1:52 remaining.
That bucket was also the final one of the game for either team.
Shenandoah missed its final four shots in that span, all from beyond the arc, and turned the ball over one time.
All five SU starters scored in double figures with Dalon McHugh leading the way with 14 points. E.J. Baltimore had 13 and Kwa McDonald, Derrick Perry and Malcolm Clark 12 each.
Baltimore also had nine assists.
The Hornets shot 49 percent to 48 percent for the Maroons. SU also had a 35-31 advantage on the glass.
With the loss, Shenandoah falls to at least the No. 9 seed in the upcoming ODAC Tournament. Official pairings will be announced later Saturday evening, with a 7 p.m. game at Washington and Lee the most likely outcome.
