SALEM, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team saw its season come to an end Friday night with an 80-38 loss to No. 3 Emory and Henry in the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals.
Shenandoah (6-21) had advanced to its third quarterfinal in five seasons of ODAC play with an upset of sixth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in Tuesday's opening round.
E&H (19-7) wasn't going to become the Hornets second straight upset victim.
The Wasps jumped all over SU in the opening five minutes of the game, outscoring the Hornets 14-2 to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Shenandoah suffered through a cold shooting night, making 13 of 56 shots (23 percent) and missed its first six shots from the field as Emory and Henry took that early lead.
The second half was even more difficult as SU missed 13 of its 14 shots from the field E&H extended its lead by 17 points.
The Wasps added to the Hornets troubles with a full court press for most of the first half – this led to 13 SU turnovers of which E&H converted into 12 points.
Emory and Henry also outscored Shenandoah 24-6 in the paint and used a 27-10 rebounding advantage to take 10 of 12 second-chance points in the opening 20 minutes.
The second half brought more of the same as E&H outscored the Hornets by seven points in the third. The two teams did play relatively even in the fourth with the Wasps scoring 10 of the 18 points in the period.
"I think we were a little overwhelmed when we found out that Kirstyn (Kirstyn Arcata) wasn't going to be able to play," coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft said.
Arcata did not play after suffering an injury in Tuesday's first round win over Virginia Wesleyan.
"This was a good experience for our players, especially our younger players," Smeltzer-Kraft continued. "It's a tough thing to explain to them how special a neutral site tournament at Division III is.
"This was a great experience (advancing to the quarterfinals) for us."
Sophomore Mia Moore led SU with 12 points while senior Erin French had 11 rebounds.
