WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 6/35 Shenandoah University continued its winning ways Wednesday afternoon with a 9-4 non-league baseball victory over Elizabethtown.
Shenandoah (8-0) broke open a tie game with two runs in sixth, three in the seventh and three more in the eighth off of a pair of Blue Jays (2-1) relievers.
After E-Town tied the game at 1-1 with a run on two hits in the top of the sixth off of SU starter Robert Klinchock (1-0), the Hornets answered with two runs on a walk, a single and two Blue Jays miscues.
With runners on the corners following a Luke Nussman walk and a Dylan Stouffer single to right center, Shenandoah skipper Kevin Anderson called for the double steal.
The play worked perfectly, and after Elizabethtown catcher Frank Ragozzino dropped the relay throw, Stouffer advanced to third.
One pitch later, he trotted home on a balk.
Nussman had a two-run double in the seventh and designated hitter Jake Loew hit his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot, in the eighth.
Klinchock allowed two runs on five hits and four walks in 6 2/3 innings to earn the win. He also struck out four.
Senior Tyler Hott pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to post his third save of the spring. He allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk while striking out one.
Tristan Baker had three hits with Loew and Nick Goode getting two each.
Loew finished his day 2 for 2 with three RBI, two walks and two runs scored. He has homered in four straight games.
Braden Stinar (1-1), the third of five pitchers, was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks in 2/3 of an inning.
Shenandoah takes to road for the first time this season with a non-league contest at Mary Washington Friday afternoon.
