Softball Sweeps Eagles

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team opened up ODAC play Wednesday by sweeping a doubleheader at Bridgewater College.

Shenandoah (6-8, 2-0 ODAC) rallied from four runs down to take game one in eight innings over the Eagles (5-13, 0-2).

In extra innings, SU executed perfectly as leadoff hitter Makaela Dawkins bunted placed runner Breanne Smith over to third for No. 3 hitter Lindsay Corbin.

Corbin slapped a single to right, barely past the outstretched glove of BC second baseman Victoria Gontarz and the Hornets owned their first lead of the game.

In the bottom of the frame, freshman Katherine Seidl (3-4) induced a pair of flyouts following the sacrifice bunt to give SU the victory.

With one out and the placed runner now at third, Seidl got Mikalia Guard to pop to short right, where Haley Koeninger made the catch and prevented Lindsey Talley from coming home.

Smith then made the play of the game, diving to catch Anna Patterson's sinking liner just inside the left-field line for final out of the game.

Dawkins, Corbin and Janae Hester all had two hits in the contest with Dawkins and Koeninger both driving in a pair.

In game two, Shenandoah completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory. This contest was halted in the bottom of the sixth due to darkness as the Eagles had one out and the tying run coming to the plate.

Seidl earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief.

Kristen Weadon and Casey Webb both had two hits and two RBI with Weadon also scoring two runs.

SU returns home on Saturday with a noon ODAC doubleheader versus Guilford.
