NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Host Christopher Newport used a strong start to key an 18-7 non-league women's lacrosse victory over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.
The Captains (8-3) scored seven of the first eight goals of the game to dispatch the Hornets (2-5).
After junior Annie McCorry tallied for SU at 24:45 to knot the game at 1-1, CNU scored the game's next six goals to grab a 7-1 lwad.
Freshman Jordyn Miller scored on a free position shot at 13:25 to end the Captains runs, and Cassie Arndt followed unassisted 1:59 later, but this would be as close as the Hornets would come.
Christopher Newport answered that two-goal Shenandoah spurt by scoring six of the final eight goals of the half to take a 13-5 lead at the break.
The Captains kept up the pressure in the second, scoring the initial three goals of the stanza to extend the lead to 16-5 with 24:05 remaining.
The two teams traded the final four goals of the game with Shannon Kelley and Miller scoring for the Hornets.
CNU outshot Shenandoah 32-17, had a 21-17 advantage in groundballs and 19-8 in draw controls.
Madeleine Card had three saves and Kiera Lane six with each woman playing 30 minutes in goal.
SU opens up ODAC play on Tuesday night with a 6 p.m. home game versus Roanoke.
