Marlins Sweep Softball

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – No. 3 Virginia Wesleyan continued it strong start to the 2017 softball season by sweeping an ODAC doubleheader from Shenandoah Sunday afternoon.

VWC (25-1, 6-0 ODAC) was a 2-0 victor in the opener before completing the sweep over Shenandoah (6-12, 2-4) with an 8-0, five-inning win in the nightcap.

Freshman Katherine Seidl held the Marlins to just two hits in game one – VWC scored on a sacrifice fly in the first and plated an unearned run in the second as Seidl struck out three and also walked three.

The only two hits Seidl (3-6) allowed were singles in the second and fourth innings.

Unfortunately, the Hornets were also only able to muster two hits in the contest. Ashlyn Drake had an infield single in the third and Breanne Smith had a single up the middle in the sixth.

Hannah Hull, who has been named the NFCA National Pitcher of the Week twice this season, improved to 11-1 on the year after scattering those two hits, walking one and striking out 11.

Virginia Wesleyan used a six-run first to take total control in the 8-0 game two victory while pitcher Courtney Wright kept her record perfect on the year by holding SU to four hits in 3.0 innings of work.

Wright (10-0) struck out one and walked one before turning it over to Alana Peters to start the fourth.

Kayla O'Connell (0-1) gave up four runs on four hits in 1/3 inning to take the loss. Carrie Robinson pitched 2 2/3 and Elizabeth Everette one inning to finish it up.

Smith had two of the Hornets five hits with Lindsay Corbin, Kristen Weadon and Makaela Dawkins all going 1-for-2 in the nightcap.

Smith had a bunt single in the third and a double to right center in the fifth.

Shenandoah continues ODAC play by hosting Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
