Softball Splits with Frostburg

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team earned a split of its non-league doubleheader with Frostburg State Thursday afternoon.

Shenandoah (4-6) came back to win game two, 5-4, after the Bobcats (5-7) were 3-0 winners in the opener.

SU jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the Bobcats in the nightcap thanks to three runs in the second and one more in the third, but had to win it in the bottom of the seventh as FSU rallied late off of winning pitcher Carrie Robinson (2-0).

In the last of the seventh, Robinson, who had two hits in the contest, got the frame started with a double to left center. She was sacrificed to third but cut down at the play on Janae Hester's groundball to second.

Catcher Karli Rorabaugh, who had reached on a fielder's choice of her own just prior to Hester coming to the plate, advanced all the way to third when Robinson was cut down at home.

Designated player Kristen Weadon then had a groundball that went through the legs of FSU third baseman Brittney Platt, allowing Rorabaugh to trot home with the game-winning run.

Robinson allowed the four runs on nine hits and three walks. She also struck out four.

In game one, starters Elizabeth Everette (1-2) and Allison Short (3-3) each pitched shutouts through seven before the wheels came off for Everette in the eighth.

The Bobcats scored three runs on two hits and a sacrifice fly off of Everette to steal the victory.

Hannah Tavik provided the game-winning RBI as she singled home placed runner Sam Gatton to lead off the frame.

In the bottom of the inning, Short stranded two runners to close out the win.

Everette allowed the three runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks.

Breanne Smith and Robinson each had two hits in the four at-bats in the contest.

With Sunday's ODAC opener versus Guilford postponed, SU is back in action on Wednesday, March 15 in a non-league doubleheader at Catholic.
