GRANTHAM, Pa. – Three Messiah College pitchers held No. 1/1 Shenandoah University to just five hits in a 4-1 non-league baseball win Wednesday afternoon.
Quinton Kuntz (2-3) gave up one run on five hits in 6.0 innings before relievers Ethan Hess and Drew Betz held SU (31-4) without a hit in the final three frames to secure the upset win.
Betz got the save, his sixth, by getting the final five outs.
The Falcons (13-21) scored three runs on four hits and two SU errors in the third before adding a single run in the eighth. Michael Bugonowicz (5-1) gave up all four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out nine in 7 2/3 innings.
In that fateful third, Messiah led off with three straight hits, scoring on the third hit, before Bugonowicz nearly avoided further damage by inducing a pair of fly outs.
An infield single followed by a throwing error allowed the final two runs to score in the frame.
Shenandoah scored its lone run in its next at-bat on a Nick Goode walk followed by a groundout and a Nate Loman RBI single to center.
Loman was one of five men to have one hit on the day.
Shenandoah hosts Washington and Lee tomorrow in a 4 p.m. ODAC contest.
