No. 12 Salisbury Upsets Baseball

WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 12/12 Salisbury took advantage of five Shenandoah University errors to top the No. 1/1 Hornets 8-4 in non-league baseball action Sunday afternoon.

After Shenandoah (33-6) had tied the contest with four runs on four hits in the sixth, Salisbury (31-9) answered with a four-spot of its own in the seventh thanks in large part to one of those five miscues.

Starting pitcher Pete Grasso (8-0) led off the Sea Gull seventh with a single to left and then scored what proved to be the game-winning run as SU pitcher CJ Morton airmailed a throw over Jake Loew's head at first base on Jack Barry's sacrifice bunt.

Hornets skipper Kevin Anderson replaced Morton (0-1) with southpaw Matt Burns, who walked Tom LaBriola before giving up a three-run HR to Jay Perry.

Neil Dutton, who started the game as the designated hitter, came on and worked the final three innings. He struck out two and scattered four hits.

Reliever Micah Wells took over for Grasso to start the seventh and worked a scoreless final three innings to earn his first save of the season. He struck out six, including the side in the eighth, and did not allow a hit.

Wells, who hadn't had an at-bat all season long, struck out with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the ninth. Wells was in the batting order because Grasso, who finished 4-for-5 with a home run and three runs scored, moved to second base after leaving the mound.

He allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks in 6.0 innings. Grasso also struck out five.

Nick Goode had a two-run double in the sixth and Chase Smallwood an RBI single up the middle. Smallwood's single plated Dutton, who had reached on an error at short.

Goode and Abel Arocho both had two hits for the Hornets.

Morton took the loss after giving up two runs on two hits and one walk in one inning of work.

Zach Teeple started and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

Shenandoah completes its regular season Monday afternoon with a 4:00 Senior Day contest versus York (Pa.).
