WASHINGTON, D.C. – Host Catholic University held Shenandoah University to a combined one run in sweeping in a non-league softball doubleheader Sunday.
Catholic (16-10) was a 2-1 victor over the Hornets (10-22) before completing the sweep with a 5-0 win in the nightcap.
SU scored one run in the third inning of game one only to see Catholic score two runs in the fourth to rally for the 2-1 win.
Shenandoah was held to three hits in the game with Breanne Smith, Lindsay Corbin and Karli Rorabaugh all getting one each.
SU scored its lone run in the third as Casey Webb drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a Smith walk and to third on Ashlyn Drake's sacrifice bunt.
As Makaela Dawkins struck out on a pitch in the dirt, Webb scampered home when the Cardinals retired Dawkins at first.
Katherine Seidl (4-14) took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits in 4.0 innings of work. Kayla O'Connell pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth with one walk and one strikeout.
Seidl also struck out two.
Claire Sturek (3-3) was the winner for CUA. She allowed one run on three hits and five walks in 5.0 innings. Sabrina Scott struck out two in two innings of relief to earn the save.
The Cards scored single runs in each of the first two innings of game two before breaking matters open with a three-run third off of SU starter Elizabeth Everette (3-4).
Everette allowed the five runs on 10 hits in 3.0 innings. She struck out one before Carrie Robinson took over to start the fourth. Robinson struck out one and walked one in her three innings of work.
Dawkins and Haley Koeninger both were 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Shenandoah offense.
Kelly Lynch (8-5) scattered nine hits in the complete game shutout. She walked one and struck out two.
The Hornets continue this road swing with a Tuesday non-league doubleheader at Messiah.
