Baseball Faces Wheaton (Mass.)

YORK, Pa. – No. 10/10 Shenandoah University baseball continues its run tonight in the 2017 York Regional with a 7:45 contest at PEOPLEsBank Park against Wheaton (Mass.).

Shenandoah (37-8) advanced into the second round with a 5-3 victory Thursday night versus Maritime (N.Y.) while Wheaton (24-14) was an 8-6 victor over Elizabethtown.

The Lyons, members of the NEWMAC, qualified for the tournament via Pool C (at-large). They are the third seed in the regional.

Tonight's game is the first-ever matchup between the two schools in baseball.

SU had 11 hits in its Thursday win including three from Neil Dutton and two from both Tristan Baker and Nick Goode.

Baker and Jake Loew each drove in two runs with Loew driving in the winning run of the game and Baker the final run.

The Hornets are now hitting .325 as a team with seven of the nine expected starters tonight hitting at least .337.

Sophomore Luke Nussman, who extended his hitting streak to 15 games last night, leads this group with a .460 average.

Loew's two RBI last night give him 56 for the year, surpassing his 2016 total by one and placing him seventh on the all-time season list. Loew is 11 RBI from the program season record.

Wheaton is hitting .286 as a team with three players: Josh LaJoie, Zach Goodwin-Boyd and Jared Sharkey, hitting at least .321.

LaJoie fronts this trio at .341 along with 14 doubles in 167 at-bats.

Right-handers Brady Furdon or Tommy Larason figure to get the call on the mound for Wheaton with Furdon bringing a 4-2 record into tonight's game and Larason 5-4. Furdon has made 10 starts this season with 42 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings.

Larason has made eight starts in his 10 appearances and has 21 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings.

Junior Michael Bugonowicz or freshman Gerard DePhillips will get the start tonight for the Hornets.

Bugonowicz is 6-1 with a 2.09 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 51 2/3 innings while DePhillips is 6-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 80 2/3 innings. Both men were named third team All-ODAC this season.

The winner of tonight's game plays the winner of the No. 1 Johns Hopkins/No. 5 Alvernia game on Saturday at 4:30.
