HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Fourth-seeded Hampden-Sydney scored the first five goals of the game Tuesday to key an 18-4 ODAC men's lacrosse tournament quarterfinal round victory over fifth-seeded Shenandoah.
Hampden-Sydney (13-5) shut the Hornets (9-8) out in the first quarter, scoring all four goals of the stanza, before scoring the initial goal of the second.
Senior Connor Bishop finally broke the string, scoring on extra-man off of a Tilghman Sanders feed from behind the cage.
However, the Tigers kept up the pressure, ending the half with six straight goals and the scoring the first four goals of third.
Sanders ended this 10-goal run with an unassisted goal with 1:47 to play in the third.
This goal also started a sequence in which the two teams split the final six goals of the contest.
Andrew Shy and Kyle Savage scored the Hornets goals in the game-ending run with Ryan Schott setting up Shy for his tally.
Savage's goal, with 4:26 remaining, closed out the scoring for both teams in the contest.
H-SC outshot SU 62-24 with Ben Judy making 25 saves for the Hornets in his final collegiate contest.
Judy's 25 saves give him 935 for his career. He now is the all-time ODAC saves leader, breaking the record set by Dave Armellini at Lynchburg from 1981-84.
Sanders finishes the year with 66 points, breaking the SU single season mark previously set by Justin Radcliff in 2007.
The Tigers also won 18-of-26 faceoffs and had a 50-20 advantage in groundballs.
"Today did not go as we had hoped but I am incredibly proud of what this team accomplished," head coach Tim Marshall said. "After being picked last in conference, we finishing fifth which was a huge step for us. I would also like to give a special thank you to our six seniors who leave this program better then they found it."
H-SC advances to Friday's semi-final round versus top-seeded Washington and Lee with the win.
Shenandoah will announce its 2018 schedule in late summer.
