Women's Lax Falls in Semis

LEXINGTON, Va. – Second-seeded Randolph-Macon advanced to the 2017 ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament championship game with a 16-10 semi-final round victory over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Yellow Jackets (11-5) will face top-seeded and tournament host Washington and Lee in Sunday's championship. The Generals advanced with a 14-4 win over the league's other Hornets, the Lynchburg Hornets, earlier Saturday.

With the scored tied at 1-1 following a Brittany Arndt goal off of an Abby Zorrilla assist at 24:53 of the first, Macon reeled off five of the game's next six goals to take a lead it would not relinquish over Shenandoah (7-11).

Arndt, who finished the game with three goals, broke up the 'Jackets five-goal run with an unassisted tally at 13:01.

Arndt's younger sister, Cassie Arndt, had the Hornets final goal of the first half with an unassist goal at 7:11.

This tally, also one of four for the younger Arndt, sandwiched a pair of two-goal runs for Randolph-Macon that gave the Yellow Jackets an 8-3 lead at the break.

The younger Arndt was involved in the initial two goals of the second, scoring unassisted at 27:12 and setting up Zorrilla at 25:46, but SU would get no closer.

Now leading 8-5, Macon scored four of the game's next five goals, broken up only by a Cassie Arndt tally at 18:42, to extend its lead out to 12-6 with 16:07 remaining.

The two teams then alternated the final eight goals of the contest with Brittany Arndt, Jacque Hemler, Annie McCorry and Cassie Arndt scoring for coach Lindsey Lutz' club.

Kiera Lane had six saves on 22 Macon shots on goal.

The Yellow Jackets outshot SU 26-21 and had a 15-13 advantage in draw controls with the Hornets scooping up 13 of the game's 22 groundballs.

Cassie Arndt had five points on four goals and one assist, Zorrilla three on a goal and three assists and Brittany Arndt three goals.

"We had a tough loss today, but I was very proud of this group for advancing to the tournament semi-finals," Lutz said. "We had a great group of young women this year that has a bright future ahead of them."

Shenandoah will announce its 2018 schedule in mid-summer.
