LYNCHBURG, Va. – Third-seeded Randolph-Macon sent Shenandoah University into the elimination bracket of the 2017 ODAC Baseball Tournament with a 7-5 win over the Hornets Saturday afternoon at Lynchburg City Stadium.
Top-seeded Shenandoah (35-7) will now play an elimination game Sunday morning at 11 a.m. versus the loser of the No. 2 Washington and Lee versus No. 4 Virginia Wesleyan contest.
The winner of the Sunday morning contest plays the final game of the day Sunday.
With the score tied at 1-1 following an SU run in the bottom of the fifth, Macon (26-14) scored three runs on two hits in the sixth to put itself on top to stay.
Winning pitcher Rick Spiers (2-2) helped himself out in the frame with a two-run triple to center off of Shenandoah starter Gerard DePhillips (6-2) that made the score 3-1 in favor of the 'Jackets.
R-MC eventually led 6-1 but had two hold on as Shenandoah scored three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth.
The Hornets had the tying run on base with one out in the ninth only to see R-MC escape by inducing a 6-4-3 double play.
Jake Loew drove in Shenandoah's final run with a single through the left side to bring home Abel Arocho from second. Arocho had led off the SU ninth with a single up the middle.
Robert Marcelle provided the offense in the eighth with a two-run double to center with Dylan Stauffer adding an RBI double to left center.
Spiers allowed one unearned run on nine hits in 7.0 innings. Shenandoah left eight men on base in those seven innings.
DePhillips took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits in 7 1/3 innings.
Neil Dutton was 4-for-5 and Abel Arocho 3-for-4 to lead the SU offense. Nate Loman and Dan Cameron had two hits each.
