WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team made it two overtime wins in a row at home this season with a 4-3 non-league win over Stevenson Wednesday evening.
After giving up a 3-0 lead, Shenandoah (4-3) scored the golden goal in the 105th minute to down Stevenson (4-3).
Awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, sophomore Jessica Stuart shot the ball around the wall and across the goal to the left post where senior Lauren Johnson was able to run onto it and flick her shot past Mustangs goalkeeper Tiffany McKee.
Johnson's game-winning goal is the first collegiate goal of her career. A four-year starter and two-year co-captain, Johnson has played the entirety of her career as back and had one career point coming into Wednesday's game.
The Hornets needed the overtime heroics as Stevenson erased a 3-0 deficit with three goals in the final 33 minutes of regulation.
Trailing 3-0 after Alison Spaziani scored unassisted for the Hornets in the 57th minute, the Mustangs scored in the 59th, 67th and 86th minutes to bring the game back to level.
Sophomore Sara Fuller had the hosts initial two goals, scoring via penalty kick in the 44th minute and unassisted in the 53rd.
The two sides were evenly matched in the team statistics with Shenandoah outshooting Stevenson 18-17 and the two squads splitting eight corner kicks.
Hornets goalkeeper Charlotte Evans had seven saves.
Shenandoah opens up ODAC play on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game versus Guilford.
