WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 17 University of Mary Washington scored two of its three goals via penalty stroke Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 non-league victory over host Shenandoah.
With Shenandoah (5-4) holding the Eagles (7-4) scoreless for the initial 45 minutes of the game, UMW scored twice in a 35-second span to seize control of the contest.
At 46:13, Allegra Massey-Elim scored unassisted when she finished off a scrum in front.
Just 45 seconds later, Massey-Elim was awarded a stroke following an SU foul in front of goalkeeper Isabella Morande.
Massey-Elim beat Morande with a waist-high shot just inside the right post.
In the 63rd minute, Erin Kaila took advantage of another penalty stroke to close out the game's scoring.
Morande finished with 10 saves as UMW outshot the Hornets 23-3. Morgan Payne and Kiera Lane had two defensive saves each in support of Morande.
Mary Washington also held a 15-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Shenandoah is back at it tomorrow in a 3 p.m. non-league game at Frostburg State.
