WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Shenandoah University field hockey team made it three straight to start the season with a 2-1 non-league victory at McDaniel Wednesday afternoon.
After McDaniel (0-2) tied the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute, Melissa DeiTos answered for the Hornets with just 52 seconds remaining to give SU (3-0) its third straight victory.
DeiTos finished off a Taylor Hayes feed – Hayes, the ODAC Player of the Week, sent a shot from the top of the circle in front, where DeiTos deflected it in for the game-winner.
Megan Stevens had the victors first goal of the game, scoring unassisted in the 28th minute on a rebound following a diving save by Green Terror goalkeeper Paige Ford.
Shenandoah goalkeeper Jenna Rampale made two saves in the win.
SU dominated possession, taking 13 of the game's 17 shots and 10 of the 12 corners.
Junior Morgan Payne also came up big with a defensive save in the second half.
"We had a great number of chances that we struggled to convert on in the first half, but everyone battled through and found a way to finish when it counted," Hornets head coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft said.
Shenandoah continues this road trip on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game at York (Pa.).
