WINCHESTER, Va. – The wait was worth it.
Forced to wait for more than two hours for the start of its non-conference volleyball match with Mount Aloysius, Shenandoah University made the most of that wait with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-21) win over the Mounties Thursday evening.
Mount Aloysius (2-3) found itself stuck on Interstate-81, just 10 miles north of the Shenandoah campus, due to a major accident on the highway.
So the Hornets (3-3) waited.
And waited some more.
Finally, MAC arrived at 8:30, and after taking 10 minutes to eat a meal that had been delivered more than 90 minutes prior, began its warmup.
The two teams officially started the match at 9:10, a full 130 minutes past the scheduled 7 p.m. start time.
It took Shenandoah just 55 more minutes to put finish off the Mounties, winning the first two sets at 12 and 17 before rallying for a 25-21 win in the third.
SU trailed 18-12 in that final set before scoring seven of the next eight points to tie it at 19-19.
MAC rebounded to take the next two, leading 21-19 only to see Shenandoah win the serve back on a Megan Hillyard to Caylin Harris kill.
Harris stepped to the service line and finished the contest out as Torie Gettier registered four straight kills to put the hosts one point from victory.
A final Harris service resulted in a Mounties attack error, giving Shenandoah the sweep.
Kaitlyn Kelley had 11 kills for the victors with Hillyard chipping in 16 assists and Emily Veach 13.
Nicole Shannon had 25 of the team's 52 digs.
SU takes to the road Saturday for a tri-match at Washington College. The Hornets face Notre Dame (Md.) in addition to the host Shorewomen.
