DOVER, Del. – The Shenandoah University men's soccer team earned its second win in three outings this season with a 2-1 non-league victory at Wesley College Friday evening.
After the two teams battled without finding the back of the net in the first 75 minutes, SU (2-1) sandwiched a pair of goals around a Wesley (0-4) tally in the final 15 minutes to earn the win.
Brian Maye, in his first action of the season, scored the opening goal at 75:28 as he found himself with just one defender to beat following a long run and knocked home his shot as he entered the 18-yard box.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, the lead lasted just two minutes as the Wolverines successfully converted a penalty kick at 77:44.
SU continued to press the action, generating two shots and a corner kick in the next 10 minutes before being awarded a PK of its own at 87:15.
Freshman Andres Garces blasted his shot home, giving coach Matt Smith's side the win in the process.
"I am very proud of our effort," Smith said. "We had a 100 percent improvement over Sunday (a 3-1 loss to William Peace)."
WC had a 13-10 advantage in shots and 5-2 in corners, but SU matched the Wolverines corners total in the second half and outshot Wesley, 8-7, over the final 45 minutes.
Freshman Sam Fischer had two saves to earn the win in the goal.
Shenandoah is right back at it Saturday in a 3:30 non-league contest at Penn St. – Altoona.
