Women's Hoops Tops Macon

WINCHESTER, Va. – Host Shenandoah University erased a six-point halftime deficit on its way to a 73-66 ODAC women's basketball victory over Randolph-Macon Tuesday evening.

Trailing 37-31 at the break, Shenandoah (6-6, 2-1 ODAC) scored the first six points of the second half in just 32 seconds to get itself back into the ballgame.

Kelly Williams, who had a game-high 38 points, answered with six straight for Macon (9-2, 2-1) to reassert control.

The Hornets, however, closed the third quarter on an 11-7 run and trailed by just one, 52-51, as the final stanza dawned.

Williams' started that quarter with a short jumper for the Yellow Jackets, but this would prove to be the visitors final lead of the contest.

SU scored the next nine points of the game, starting with a McKenzie Mathis free throw and ending with a Jordan Sondrol 3-pointer, to give the Hornets a 60-54 lead with 7:22 remaining.

In between, senior Kirstyn Arcata had five consecutive points on a layup followed by three free throws.

Sondrol, who led the victors with 25 points, had four 3-pointers on the night.

Macon would cut the deficit to two points on three separate occasions, but each time Shenandoah answered.

The last time, on a Sondrol layup with 3:14 left, kickstarted a 9-4 game-closing run for the Hornets.

"We made some big plays tonight and this is a great win for our program," SU coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft said.

"What an awesome way to start 2018!"

Sondrol had a team-high 25 with Arcata adding 22 and Ashley Stone 11 for the Hornets.

Williams had 38 points and 18 rebounds in the losing effort for Macon.

"We wanted to limit what Williams could do, and we struggled with that, but we did a good job of limiting what the other players could do," Smeltzer-Kraft said.

Only one other Yellow Jackets player, Becca Arrington, scored in double figures. She had 10 points.

SU shot 42 percent (24-of-57) to offset a 50-37 rebounding edge for Macon.

Shenandoah travels to Hollins on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest.
