LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Kirstyn Arcata's 1000th career point highlighted a 66-50 ODAC Shenandoah University women's basketball victory at Randolph College Saturday afternoon.
Arcata became the 19th woman in program history to reach the milestone with her layup at the 5:45 mark of the fourth quarter. This bucket came in the middle of a 14-0 run that turned a two-point SU (8-11, 4-6 ODAC) lead into a 16-point advantage.
Shenandoah led wire-to-wire versus the WildCats (4-14, 1-9), but saw Randolph sandwich a 7-0 run around the end of the third quarter to cut the deficit to just two, 45-43, with 7:51 left.
SU answered with a Jordan Sondrol layup followed by an Ashley Stone 10-footer to regain momentum, and eventually that run out the 14-point bulge that clinched the contest.
"I am so proud of this group to get an ODAC road win," head coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft said. "We had a bunch of positives from many people, but what a special moment for Kirstyn Arcata and our program. I am glad we could support her efforts with a win."
Sondrol led the victors with 26 points with Arcata scoring 17 (she now has 1004 career points) and Stone 10.
SU shot 38 percent (23-of-61) and grabbed 43 of the game's 80 rebounds.
Sondrol led that effort with 10 boards.
The win completes a season sweep over Randolph.
Arcata is the first woman to score 1000 career points since Holly Chittenden '15, '18 D.PT did it versus Bridgewater on February 4, 2015.
The women return home for the first time in six games Wednesday night with a 7 p.m. ODAC game versus Bridgewater. The nightcap of a doubleheader with the SU men, this game completes opening night for the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center.
