WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Randolph-Macon used a big second half to earn a 90-56 ODAC men's basketball victory at Shenandoah University Wednesday evening.
Leading 36-29 at the break, Macon (15-5, 9-2 ODAC) scored 54 second half points to pull away from Shenandoah (8-12, 3-8).
Feeding off the emotion of playing before the largest crowd in program history and in opening the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center, SU held the lead on two occasions in the first half and held a four-point lead as late as the 2:26 mark of the first.
Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets had an answer.
Macon scored the final 11 points of the half, punctuated by a buzzer-beating Grayson Midulla 3-pointer, to take a 36-29 lead into the break.
The Hornets were able to keep it to within four points, 43-39, following a Jonah Meredith layup at 16:09, only to see the 'Jackets put together another run.
R-MC ripped off 12 of the game's next 14 points to take a 55-41 lead by the 11:00 mark and were able to coast home to the 34-point win.
Christopher Chaney led the hosts with 14 points and nine rebounds with Meredith adding 11 points.
Buzz Anthony paced four Macon players in double figures with 24 points.
The two teams split 80 rebounds.
SU shot 41 percent (21-of-51) but was just 2-of-11 (18 percent) from behind the arc and 12-of-22 (55 percent) from the line.
"It was a tough loss, but what a great atmosphere tonight," Hornets head coach Adam Walsh said of playing the first-ever game in the Wilkins Center. "The crowd was tremendous."
The first-ever game in the Wilkins Center drew 1267 fans. The Hornets previous home, Shingleton Gymnasium, had a capacity of 680.
Shenandoah takes to the road Saturday for a 2:00 ODAC contest at Roanoke.
