Macon Tops Football

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Randolph-Macon combined strong performances in all three phases of the game Saturday to defeat Shenandoah 45-14 in ODAC football action.

Macon (5-1, 3-0 ODAC) scored the initial 45 points of the game, blocked a Shenandoah (3-3, 1-2) punt and held the Hornets to an 0-for-4 performance on fourth down conversions on its way to its fifth straight victory.

IN DEPTH

The tone for the game was set on the first possession as R-MC held SU to a three-and-out and subsequently broke up a Brant Butler pass out of punt formation to give the 'Jackets a 1st and 10 from the Hornets 33.

Five plays later, Tre Frederick blasted over from the 3 and Macon took a lead it would not relinquish.

The Yellow Jackets, who lead Division III in time of possession, held the ball for least 8:39 in each quarter and 37:29 in total. The 'Jackets scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and registered points on five of six legitimate possessions in the first half.

The Shenandoah offense, which came into the game averaging over 524 yards per game, was held to just 391 and turned the ball over three times.

Quarterback Hayden Bauserman finished his day 29-of-56 for 289 yards and two touchdowns but was picked off twice in the first half. His second interception came on what looked like was going to be a successful fourth down conversion, but Yonis Blanco ripped the ball out of Justin Ayers' hands as Ayers was falling to the ground and then returned that pick 20 yards to set up a Macon first down at the 50.

R-MC scored 21 points off the Shenandoah turnovers.

Randolph-Macon finished its afternoon with 486 yards in total offense, including 298 on the ground. Frederick, Jordan Hall, Eric Hoy and quarterback Burke Estes all had at least 50 yards rushing.

Rashadeen Byrd Jr. had 82 yards on the ground for the Hornets along with an additional 32 through the air while Casey Stewart had nine catches for 113 yards and one touchdown.
