Hockey Beats Eagles in OT Thriller

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University field hockey team won a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over ODAC rival Bridgewater College Wednesday evening.

Senior Morgan Payne scored off of a penalty corner 65 seconds into sudden victory overtime to push SU (8-3, 1-1 ODAC) past the Eagles (4-5,1-1).

16:37 | Kelsey Jones crossed the ball from the top right of the semi-circle to Taylor Hayes who one times her shot to score the first goal of the game.

71:05 | Senior Morgan Payne redirected a Kelsey Jones shot up and over the Bridgewater goalie to end the contest just over a minute into the overtime period.

BC

18:53 | BC answered Hayes' goal with a two-on-one situation. Caroline Quigley passed the ball through to Courtney Cook who was able to shoot past keeper Isabella Morande.

"After a tough ODAC loss on Saturday, we really needed to get one in the win column tonight," head coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft said. "As always, the team battled all the way to the end to pull off the much needed ODAC win."

MATCH NOTES

  • SU outshot BC 10-2.

  • SU also had the advantage in penalty corners 11-4.

  • This is the second win in a row for SU, who beat Bridgewater 3-0 during ODAC Tournament play last year after losing 1-0 in the regular season.

  • Eight out of the last 10 times the two programs have met, the game has been decided by one goal.
