Hockey Falls in Championship

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Lynchburg scored three quick goals to key a 7-2 victory over Shenandoah Saturday night in the ODAC Field Hockey Championship.

Winning its 19th ODAC title in program history, top-seeded Lynchburg (15-5) shutdown both comeback attempts, never letting Shenandoah (15-5) get within two goals after scoring three of its own in the first 12 minutes of the game.

SU was able to cut Lynchburg's lead to two goals on two separate occasions but LYN responded promptly to deter any momentum.

HOW IT HAPPENED

20:41 | Morgan Payne inserted a corner from the left side of the goal. Taylor Hayes' shot was redirected at the left post by Payne to cut the deficit to two. Lynchburg had a 3-1 lead

22:57 | Freshman Kelsey Jones dribbled through the entire Lynchburg defense and crossed the ball to the left side of the goal for Natalie Fyock to score bringing the score to 4-2.

05:54 | Isabella Eldrige sent a ball into the semi-circle for Jackie Lerro to tap it in from close range.

08:10 | Isabella Eldridge scored an unassisted goal off of a corner.

11:31 | Jackie Lerro scored her second of the game from Kaylie Truitt, giving Lynchburg the 3-0 lead.  

22:28 | LYN responded quickly to Shenandoah's first goal, Emily Dudley scored an unassisted goal off a rebounded ball.

31:27 | Emily Dudley scored her second of the game off of a Nikki Simpao assist to stop Shenandoah's scoring momentum heading into halftime.

60:56 | Off of an SU yellow card, Nikki Simpao created her own scoring opportunity by dribbling nearly 30 yards off and drilling her shot from 15-yards out.

66:29 | Nikki Simpao found Alexis Brown to score the last goal of the match.

QUOTES FROM COACH

"Lynchburg played better than us tonight," head coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft said. "We dug ourselves in a hole early with some defensive breakdowns that we couldn't overcome. That being said, we fought hard the entire match and never gave in or let up. We did a lot of great things this season and our last game doesn't define the year. These seniors are leaving the program in a better place than when they entered as freshmen and that is all a coach can ask for. We wish Lynchburg the best of luck going into the NCAA tournament and hope they represent the Old Dominion Athletic Conference well."

MATCH NOTES

  • LYN outshot SU 28-8.

  • LYN also had the 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.

  • Isabella Morande recorded nine saves while facing 16 shots on goal.

  • Morgan Payne and Kelsey Jones each recorded a defensive save.

  • Taylor Hayes and Natalie Fyock took two shots a piece.

  • Kaylie Truitt took a match high six shots, all of which were on goal, for Lynchburg.

  • With the win, Lynchburg earned a bid to the NCAA tournament.

  • Shenandoah's 15 wins marks a new program record for wins in a season.

ALL-TOURNAMENT

Three women were named to the ODAC All-Tournament at the conclusion of the championship match.

  • Senior defender Morgan Payne was named to the All-Tournament team for the third year in a row.

  • Junior Maddie Price was named to the All-Tournament Team after scoring the overtime goal Friday night that put SU into the championship. This is her first ODAC honor.

  • Freshman Kelsey Jones, who set up two of the three SU goals this weekend, earned her first ODAC honor as well.

UP NEXT

The Hornets finish with a program-best 15 wins. The 2019 schedule will be released in the summer.

Payne will compete in the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game Saturday, November 17 on at 5 p.m. at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, Pennsylvania. Spooky Nook is also the host location for the NCAA Division III national championship that same weekend.
