WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team completed its holiday tournament Saturday evening with an 83-62 victory over Southern Virginia.
Shenandoah (4-7) snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory over the Knights (4-7).
IN BRIEF
After the two teams traded the lead twice and were tied on one additional occasion in the first six minutes of the game, SU took the lead for good on a Brett Swilling jumper in the paint at the 12:46 mark of the first.
Swilling's bucket was the Hornets second in what turned out to be a 17-2 run that turned a 12-9 Southern Virginia lead into a 26-14 Shenandoah advantage by the 5:47 mark.
Christopher Chaney, who started the run with a layup at 14:12, completed it by canning a pair of free throws at the 5:47 mark.
SU led by as much as 17 before taking a 14-point, 37-23, lead at the break.
The Hornets led by double digits for the entire second half, and closed the game out on an 18-10 run.
Chaney led all players with a career-high 35 points. He was 14-of-23 from the field (with one 3-pointer) and 6-of-13 from the line to surpass his previous career-high by 11 points.
