WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Guilford College escaped with a 71-70 ODAC men's basketball victory over Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon at the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center.
After Guilford (5-4, 2-1 ODAC) missed two free throws with 2.8 seconds left, Shenandoah (3-5, 0-3) had a chance to win at the buzzer but saw Jalyn Jarrett's runner at the free throw hit the top of the box and miss the rim on the way down.
IN BRIEF
The Hornets once again struggled from the free throw line, missing seven of 20 attempts, and allowed GC to storm back from an early 11-point deficit.
Shenandoah scored 13 of the game's first 15 points, taking a 13-2 lead following an Avery White 3-pointer with 15:35 remaining.
The Quakers answered with 16 of the game's next 19 points to take a 18-16 lead with 10:44 left. After Alan Dabney briefly put SU back in front, 21-18, with a 3-pointer at 9:25, Guilford threatened to run away with it by reeling off a 23-6 run over the next 6:18.
Now trailing 41-27, Shenandoah completed the first half on a 14-2 run to trail by just two, 43-41.
Guilford held the lead for the remainder of the contest, but the it was a five-point game for all but three minutes in the second half. It was a four-possession contest for the final 6:47.
The Hornets had multiple chances to take the tie or take the lead, but shot just 3-for-20 (15 percent) from beyond the arc in the second half and 31 percent (9-of-29) overall.
QUOTABLE
"We are learning," head coach Adam Walsh said. "We just need to learn that every possession matters and sometimes it takes a loss to learn that lesson.
"I am very happy with our effort today, especially on the defensive end and on the glass."
UP NEXT
The Hornets are off for the next week because of final exams and return to the court on Monday, December 17 with a noon non-league home game versus Mary Washington.
