Marlins Rally Past Women's Hoops

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Virginia Wesleyan saved its best for last in a 60-47 ODAC women's basketball victory over Shenandoah Wednesday evening.

The Marlins (12-12, 9-6 ODAC) scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to rally past Shenandoah (11-13, 7-8) and sweep the regular season series.

The Hornets led by nine as late as the 4:35 mark of the third, but saw VWU reel off 21 of the game's next 25 points to take a seven-point, 48-41, lead with 4:20 to play.

Shenandoah, which struggled from the field (13-of-52, 25 percent), was able to keep it within striking distance until the Marlins got hot from the free throw line down the stretch.

Virginia Wesleyan was 20-of-23 (89 percent) from the charity stripe for the game and made all eight of its attempts in the final 36 seconds to secure the victory.

VWU extended a five-point, 50-45, lead into the final margin of victory on the strength of one layup and the 8-for-8 showing from the line.

After trailing by three, 10-7, at the end of one, SU outscored its visitors 17-8 in the second to take a 24-19 lead into the halftime locker room.

The Hornets eventually expanded that lead out to nine points on two occasions, the last at that 4:35 mark of the third, before Virginia Wesleyan went on its run.

Senior Kirstyn Arcata and sophomore Jordan Sondrol each paced the hosts with 12 points with Ashley Stone adding 11 and McKenzie Mathis eight.

Jayla Harris had 25 points for the visitors.

Virginia Wesleyan had a slight, 39-38, rebounding advantage.

The Shenandoah women complete their regular season Saturday with a 4:30 ODAC contest at Washington and Lee.
