WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Shenandoah University softball team opened up its 2018 season Saturday afternoon with a 20-15 non-league win over Southern Virginia.
Playing in the Salem Invitational hosted by Salem College, the Hornets (1-0) scored their 20 runs on 18 hits in taking out the Knights (0-1).
All nine starters had at least one hit for coach Marlena Kotynski's squad with freshmen Maryann Hollen and Sierra Beaty leading the way with three hits each.
Beaty was 3-for-5 with four RBI while Hollin had three hits and two RBI in her four at-bats.
Freshman classmates Carly Shaw, Allie Schey and Autumn Beasley had two hits each, as did senior Kristen Weadon.
Shaw also drove in three runs.
In the circle, Carrie Robinson had two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of work and Elizabeth Everette struck out one in 3 1/3.
Shenandoah did most of its damage in three innings, scoring four runs in both the first and second before putting up a nine-spot in the sixth.
The Hornets will play three games tomorrow at the invitational, opening with Frostburg State at 10 a.m.
