GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sixth-seeded Guilford College eliminated Shenandoah University from the 2018 ODAC Men's Basketball Tournament with an 89-78 victory Tuesday night in the opening round of the tourney.
With Shenandoah (8-18) leading 35-34 following an Avery White jumper with 2:42 to play in the first, Guilford (15-11) answered with the final four points of the stanza to take a 38-35 lead at the break.
The run continued for the Quakers to start the second - GC scored the initial six points of the half to extend its lead to 46-35 before Christopher Chaney hit a jumper in the lane at the 16:25 mark.
Unfortunately for the Hornets faithful, Guilford wasn't finished.
The hosts put together another run, this one 16-10, to lead 62-47 with 11:44 remaining.
The GC lead would remain at least eight points the rest of the way.
Chaney brought the Hornets to that eight-point deficit with a 3-pointer at 10:28; Guilford responded by scoring 21 of the game's next 30 points to increase its lead to a game-high 20.
Chaney paced the Hornets with 18 points with Jonah Meredith and Kwa McDonald both chipping in 17. Dominic Steward, like Meredith and McDonald playing in his final collegiate contest, rounded out the SU scorers in double figures with 12.
Shenandoah shot 41 percent (27-of-66) to 52 percent (34-of-65) for the Quakers. Guilford also had a 50-31 edge on the glass that led to it scoring 11 of the game's 15 second chance points and 50 of 74 points in the paint.
SU will announce its 2018-19 schedule this summer.
