Wasps Advance Past Women's Hoops

SALEM, Va. – Top-seeded Emory and Henry ended Shenandoah University's women's basketball season with a 79-53 win Thursday in the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals.

Playing before 211 Salem Civic Center fans, E&H (21-5) held Shenandoah (12-15) scoreless for a span of 5:18 in the first quarter to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 19-5 lead.

Jordan Sondrol, who was named second team All-ODAC earlier Thursday, ended the scoreless streak for the Hornets by canning a pair from the line with 2:50 remaining in the quarter.

After the Wasps extended the lead to 20 points with 4:41 remaining in the second, SU closed out the first half on a 12-5 run to cut the deficit to 12, 41-29, at the break.

The two teams ended up splitting 32 second quarter points.

Shenandoah shot 9-of-25 (36 percent) to 55 percent (16-of-29) for the Wasps in the first half and saw E&H grab 21 of the 31 rebounds.

Any thoughts of a Hornets comeback ended as Emory and Henry outscored SU 22-9 in the third to run its lead to 63-38 after 30 minutes of play.

The teams played basically an even fourth quarter, with E&H scoring 16 of the 31 points in the stanza, to provide the final margin of victory.

Senior Kirstyn Arcata, playing in her final collegiate contest, led the Hornets with 18 points with Sondrol adding 16 and Ashley Stone 15.

Stone gave SU a second player earning All-ODAC accolades with her third team selection Thursday morning.

The Hornets shot 32 percent (17-of-53) for the game while Emory and Henry was at an even 50 percent (32-of-64). SU turned the ball over 21 times to lead to 20 E&H points.

The Wasps also had a 47-25 advantage on the glass and outscored the Hornets 40-12 in the paint.

"We didn't play as well as we would have liked today, but looking at the big picture we had a very positive season," head coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft said. "The transformation over the last four years has been remarkable and with our core returning next year, our future is very bright."

Shenandoah, which doubled its 2016-17 win total this year, will announce its 2018-19 schedule this summer.
