Misericordia Sweeps Baseball

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Misericordia University swept a non-league baseball doubleheader from No. 12/16 Shenandoah University Friday evening.

The Cougars (2-0) were 5-4 winners in game one before completing the sweep with a 3-1 victory in the second contest.

Shenandoah (2-2) allowed just one hit in game two, but managed just five total hits itself in the 14 innings of baseball.

In game one, Misericordia held Shenandoah without a hit for the first 5 1/3 innings but had to hold on for the 5-4 win.

SU scored four runs in the sixth, with Luke Nussman driving in the first run on a sacrifice fly before Grant Thompson plated Tristan Baker with a single to second base.

Thompson's hit was the squad's first of the game.

One batter later, Nick Goode doubled to left to make it 5-4 in favor of the visitors.

The Hornets eventually reloaded the bases only to see the Cougars get out of it on a groundout to third.

Shenandoah got the tying run to third on the seventh but Nussman lined out to short to end the contest.

Gerard DePhillips (0-1) took the loss for SU. He allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Jake Kurtz (1-0) was the winner for MU with 5 2/3 innings of hitless work. Michael Turton walked four and allowed three hits but picked up the save.

In game two, Misericordia scored one run in the third and two in the sixth, the latter two runs coming with two outs, to complete the sweep.

Christian Rice drove in the Hornets lone run with a single to right to score Henry Delavergne. Delavergne led off the sixth with a double down the left field line.

Senior Michael Bugonowicz (0-1) took the loss after allowing one run on one hit and one walk in five innings. He also struck out five.

Ellott Forde (1-0) had the game two victory for the Cougars. He gave up one run on three hits and one walk while striking out four. Kyle Melahn pitched a perfect seventh for the save.

Shenandoah hosts Widener on Sunday at 2:00.
