ASHLAND, Va. – No. 5 Randolph-Macon opened the 2018 ODAC softball slate by sweeping a doubleheader from Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (19-1, 2-0 ODAC) were 5-0 winners in the opener before completing the day with a 2-1 win over SU (9-9, 0-2).
Shenandoah had the tying run on second base in the seventh inning of game two only to see R-MC get out of it with a flyout and a groundout.
Freshman Autumn Beasley accounted for the Hornets game two run with a solo home run to lead off the SU seventh.
Sophomore Elizabeth Everette (4-1) pitched very well in the nightcap, only allowing the two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out one.
Freshman Morgan Henley finished the game 2-for-3 with Allie Schey, Sammy Amateau and Meghan Stout each getting one hit.
In game one, Candace Whittemore threw a five-hit shutout to down SU, 5-0. Schey was 2-for-3 with Sammy Amateau, Maryann Hollen and Carly Shaw adding one hit each.
Katherine Seidl (4-5) went the distance for the Hornets, giving up the five runs on 14 hits and one walk.
Whittemore (9-1) had 10 strikeouts against two walks.
Madie Rhodes (5-0) was the winning pitcher in game two. She struck out eight and allowed the one run on six hits.
SU is back in action on Tuesday in a 2:30 p.m. ODAC doubleheader at Lynchburg.
