Women's Lax Takes Bite Out of Bulldogs

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.- The women's lacrosse team completed their Florida trip with an 18-7 non-conference win versus DeSales University Wednesday afternoon.

The Hornets (3-2) earned their second win of the trip by scoring the initial six goals of the contest versus the Bulldogs (0-4).

Senior Abby Zorrilla, who had five assists in Monday's ODAC win over Roanoke, scored three of the six goals in that opening run with Nikki Zerna assisting on each of the tallies. Freshman Alyson Bittinger added two goals with Alexandra Simonson chipping in a goal and an assist.

Simonson's goal, on a free position shot at 20:51, ended that opening run.

After DeSales scored at 14:46 and 13:56, SU closed out the first half on a 4-1 run to take a 10-3 lead into the break.

The Hornets scored six of the first seven goals of the second to expand their lead out to 12, 16-4, with 14:00 remaining.

Shannon Kelley, who had the final goal of this spurt by finishing off a Zerna assist at the 14-minute mark, closed out the day's scoring with an unassisted goal 45 seconds before the final horn.

Zerna finished the game with a game-high eight points on two goals and school-record-tying six assists with Bittinger four goals and one assist, Simonson two goals and two assists, Zorrilla three goals, Kelley two goals and one assist and Annie McCorry two goals.

SU outshot the Bulldogs 28-24 and a 17-9 edge in draw controls. DeSales scooped up 24 of the game's 41 groundballs.

Hornets goalkeepers Maddie Albornoz and Gionna Maria combined to make five saves.

"It feels good to go 2-0 on our trip," head coach Lindsey Lutz said. "This was a great team win and we were able to get everyone involved today. We are looking forward to going back home to take on a strong Scranton team."

Shenandoah hosts Scranton on Saturday at 3.
