Royals Sweep Softball

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Homestanding Eastern Mennonite University banged out 28 hits in sweeping an ODAC softball doubleheader from Shenandoah Tuesday afternoon.

The Royals (17-11, 5-7 ODAC) were 8-7 winners in eight innings in game one before completing the sweep over SU (10-16, 1-7) with a 12-4, six inning victory in the nightcap.

In game one, Shenandoah erased a 7-4 deficit with three runs in the sixth, but saw the Royals take advantage of their placed runner to score the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth of an 8-7 victory.

Maryann Hollen led a 13-hit attack with three hits and two RBI in four at-bats while Autumn Beasley, Sierra Beaty and Carly Shaw all had two hits. Shaw drove in a pair of runs on a double in the sixth that tied the game at 7-7.

Elizabeth Everette (4-5) took the loss in relief. Everette gave up five hits in 4.0 innings of work in relief of Katherine Seidl. Seidl allowed seven runs on 10 hits and one walk in 3 2/3 innings. Everette and Seidl each struck out two.

EMU answered a two-run Shenandoah first with three of its own in the bottom of the frame before scoring one in the second, three in the third, four in the fifth and one in the sixth to end the game early.

Hollen was again the story offensively with another two hits while Beaty drove in a pair on a single to center in the first.

Megan Wilk had a solo home run in the third.

Carrie Robinson (1-3) took the loss after giving up four runs on five hits and six walks in 2.0 innings. Everette pitched the final 3 2/3 innings.

Shenandoah hosts Bridgewater on Thursday in a 4 p.m. ODAC doubleheader.
