Susquehanna Upsets Baseball

WINCHESTER, Va. – Three errors led to a pair of unearned runs for Susquehanna University in a 4-1 non-league baseball victory over Shenandoah University Thursday afternoon.

The River Hawks (14-19) scored unearned runs in the second and fifth, along with a solo home run in the eighth and a single run in the ninth, to upset No. 14/29 Shenandoah (27-9).

Susquehanna starter John Cooley (2-1), who entered the game with an 18.62 ERA, held the Hornets to just four hits in 7.0 innings of work.

Cooley did not strike out a batter but walked just two and scattered four hits in the seven innings.

Shenandoah scored its lone run in the third as Jamie Naill had a one-out single up the middle and scored all the way from first on a Henry Delavergne double into the corner in left.

The 'Hawks scored all four of their runs with two outs. In the second, a pair of infield errors followed by a single led to the first run.

The visitors retook the lead in the sixth as Jimmy Loftus reached on a one-out error, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then crossed the plate with what proved to be the game-winning run on a Luke Tuttle double.

Freshman Michael Prosperi (2-1) took the loss for the Hornets. He gave up three runs (one earned) on eight hits and one walk in 8.0 innings.

Prosperi also struck out five.

Shenandoah completes its ODAC slate on Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Virginia Wesleyan.
